He was drafted second overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2007 after one season with the Texas Longhorns. In 2008, the team became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
After Wanda and Wayne divorced, Durant's grandmother Barbara Davis raised him. Father and son attended 13-year-old basketball tournaments.
Durant, now 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m), averaged 25.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists for the Texas Longhorns in 2006–07. Texas went 25–10 and 12–4 in conference.
Texas, a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, defeated New Mexico State but lost to USC in the second round despite Durant's 30-point, 9-rebound performance.
After the Portland Trail Blazers selected Greg Oden first, the Seattle SuperSonics selected Durant second in the 2007 NBA draft.
Durant was invited to US national team training camp in February 2007. When the roster was cut to twelve players, he was cut despite a good performance.
6'10" (2.08 m) Durant plays small forward. In December 2016, Durant revealed that he was 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m) in shoes.
